Ironman Triathlon history
– The story of an iconic sports event
John Collins, a Naval officer, stationed in Hawaii, an his wife Judy, had the idea, during an awards banquet for the Waikiki Swim Club, of combining the three endurance races on the island into one race. On February 18th, 1978, 15 competitors came to Waikiki to take the first ever Ironman triathlon challenge.
Worldwide recognition came when ABC got the permission to film the event in 1980. In 1982 a lot saw how Julie Moss collapsed just before the finish line. She crawled over it. An iconic moment in Iron Man that got all around the world. From that moment triathlon got more popular.
Now, thousands of triathletes, from all over the world, challenge themselves to prove that it is possible. Even powered by hand cycle bikes and wheelchairs. They all want to be part of the Ironman history.
