It’s all like going on a trip with your car. Before you start, it’s a good idea to go with a full gas tank. So you’re going to top off before you ride, even if you’ve some fuel left from the last time.  

Look the same with your body’s engine. When you go for a workout, fuel yourself first.  

For an hour-long workout you need to make sure you have a combination of carbs and protein to provide a stream of energy during strenuous exercise and nutrients to repair muscle afterwards. For people trying to tone and lose fat, there is a myth that by not eating, they are going to go into further deficit and lose more fat. In reality, their bodies may shut down and not lose anything.  

But, what to eat before a workout ? A good store of carbohydrate to maintain blood sugar while you exercise, is a perfect idea. If you eat that before a hard workout, it can help you provide enough fuel for your working muscles. Take a little bit of protein too, just enough to allow the carbs to enter the bloodstream slowly. don’t take to much, because it might leave you feeling uncomfortable. A smoothie with fruit, milk and protein powder will work well.Eating before your workout keeps you from getting hungry while you workout.  

What to eat before a workout depends on what you like the most, and of course the time you want to exercise.
